Altered Art:  Dad's Game Box

Penny Yoder
Magic Stampin' Bus
Beginners Stamping Team

I had my game boards laminated to provide a lasting surface that could take normal wear and tear of use. You could, also, apply Krylon Crystal Clear Spray Sealer instead. However, since it is a wet compound, there could be bleeding of the colors; that's why I chose to laminate mine. You could, also, use a clear contact paper, as well.

I chose to use a clear, flat finish for my box so it would keep the natural wood look. I've seen boxes like these altered in other ways: painted different colors, embellished on the outside with game pieces, etc. Let your imaginations run wild and enjoy!

Supply List:
Wooden box with a lip on the lid - (Joanne's or Michael's)
White, Basic Black, Real Red, and Chocolate Chip card stock - (Stampin' Up)

Patterned Card Stock for top insert of wooden box
Metallic Silver and Metallic Gold card stock - (Die Cuts with a View)
6 dice (used for Backgammon or any other games in your box)

12 buttons of each color: red, black, tan, and white - (Fabric Depot or any fabric store)
A deck of miniature playing cards or a regular size deck of playing cards - I put in a deck with Labradors since we have
one of each in our family. Ü
Krylon Crystal Clear Spray Sealer – Optional

Sand Paper
Clear Contact Paper
Adhesive and/or Elmer's Glue
Grid Cutting Mat for Work Surface - (Creative Memories)

Paper cutter

A white colored pencil - Prismacolor

Instructions

1.      Prepare Box by sanding any rough surface with fine sand paper.

2.      Lightly spray box inside and out with Krylon Crystal Clear spray sealer.  Allow to dry.

3.      Cut both pieces of the metallic card stock: 6 1/4" x 6 1/4"- set aside.

4.      Cut 2 pieces of the white card stock: 6 1/4" x 6 1/4"- set aside.

       5.      Cut 1 Piece of patterned card stock:  6 1/4" x 6 1/4".  Adhere to the top
        insert of the box.

Making the Checker Board:

6.      Cut 32 squares 3/4" of Real Red cardstock and 32 squares 3/4" of black cardstock. Set aside.

7.      Take one of the 6" x 6" pieces of white cardstock and lightly draw 3/4" grid lines going vertical and horizontal, so it looks like a piece of graph paper. This will be your placement guide for the squares. Adhere the red and black squared onto the cardstock, alternating the colors. Set aside and let dry.

Making the Backgammon Board:

8.        Cut 12 rectangles, 1/2" x 2 3/4", of the black cardstock and 12 rectangles, 1/2" x 2 3/4", of the brown cardstock. At the end of each rectangle, make a dot with the white colored pencil in the center at 1/4". Cut a line from this dot to one corner at the opposite end of rectangle. Cut another line from the white dot to the other corner at the opposite end of the rectangle. Now you have a long, skinny triangle. Set aside.

9.        Take the other piece of 6" x 6" white cardstock and on two opposite sides, mark at 1/2" spacing. You should get 12 on one side and 12 on the other. This will be your placement guide for the triangles. Adhere the black and brown triangles onto the cardstock, alternating the colors. I very carefully put glue on the tips of the triangles. Set aside and let dry.

10.    Adhere the Checker Board to the 6 1/4" x 6 1/4" piece of gold metallic cardstock.

11.    Adhere the Backgammon Board to the 6 1/4" x 6 1/4" piece of silver metallic cardstock.
