Altered Paint Can

Karen Gibson
Rubber Roadsters
Advanced
Stamping Team Designer

These cans would be great for Christmas, baby showers, wedding, and birthday. There is no end of what you can put in them!  Paint cans may be purchased at your local Paint/Hardware store or Home Improvement store. Ask for the paint can opener when you purchase the can.  Most places will give you the opener for free. The gallon cans are 2 to 3 dollars each. You can use one piece of cardstock to cover the can instead of two different colors. I used white butcher paper to cover the quart size paint can. If you want something stronger to hold the cardstock to the paint can try spray adhesive or run the cardstock through a Xyron machine. I have done all of these with good results. This altered can project shows items that I stamped to place inside as a gift. The candle ring and card match the stamps on the outside of the can.

Supplies:

•  Carved & Candlelit Stamp set (Stampin’ Up!)
•  Pattern Print Background Stamp (Stampin’ Up!)
•  Pumpkin Pie Classic dye ink (Stampin’ Up!)
•  Old Olive Classic dye ink (Stampin’ Up!)
•  Really Rust Classic dye ink (Stampin’ Up!)
•  Very Vanilla Cardstock (Stampin’ Up!)
•  Pumpkin Pie Cardstock (Stampin’ Up!)
•  Old Olive Cardstock (Stampin’ Up!)
•  Gallon Paint can, and paint can opener
•  1” Circle hole punch
•  Double sided tape
•  Compass
•  Ribbon

Instructions:

1.    Remove handle from paint can and set aside.

2.    Cut two pieces of vanilla cardstock 3 ½” x 10 ¾”. Measure approximately 1-1/8” down from the short sides. Use the circle punch to make the openings for the handle. Do not punch the complete width of the circle punch. Punch about ¾ of the punch. See diagram for placement and measurements.

3.    Stamp prepared vanilla cardstock using Pumpkin Pie, Really Rust and Old Olive ink. On the sample, I inked the pumpkin with Pumpkin Pie and then rolled the inked stamp just along the edges in Really Rust before stamping it on the cardstock. This rolling technique adds depth the image.

4.    Cut Pumpkin Pie cardstock 10 ¾” x 4 ¼”. Stamp background image using Pumpkin Pie ink.

5.    Use double stick tape to adhere stamped vanilla cardstock to top of can. Add the stamped pumpkin pie cardstock around the bottom of the can.

6.    Reattach the handle to the paint can. Wrap a ribbon around the handle; attach the paint can opener to it.

7.    With the compass make a 5 3/8” circle using Pumpkin Pie cardstock, stamp with Pumpkin Pie ink using background image. Stamp pumpkin on vanilla cardstock and layer it to Old Olive. Adhere to stamped circle. Use double stick tape and place on can lid.
