Pop-Up Room Card

By Stephanie Loomis
Crafty Cruisers
Intermediate Stamping Team Designer

I learned this technique from my friend, Melissa Baldwin. It is highly adaptable and GREAT fun!  I recently won a contest using this submission, and I’m thrilled to share it with my readers!  Any idea will work for this project!  I’ve done this card as a bathroom as show and a barn (with little chicks). It can be an outdoor scene---think bugs!  It would be a darling apparel shop. There is no limit to the ideas available for this technique.

Supplies:

•  Rub-A-Dub stamp set (TAC)
•  Sketchy Borders stamp set (TAC)
•  Palette Noir Ink Pad
•  Palette Moulin Rouge Ink Pad
•  Palette Cognac Ink Pad
•  Square cardstock (12”x 12” is easiest to work with, but 8” x 8” and 6” x 6”, also, work well.)   Any color will do---even patterned paper.
•  Scrap white cardstock
•  Circle or oval die cut of patterned paper
•  Gold rimmed circle tag
•  Scissors
•  Fine tip marker
•  Prismacolor Pencils
•  Gamsol Odorless mineral spirits
•  Blending stumps
•  Dimensional Magic (Plaid)
•  Silver microbeads (Penny Wise Arts)
•  Scotch Double Stick Tape (3M) for adhering pieces

Instructions:

  1. Score your paper into halves each way. (This leaves you with four equal quarter sections.)

  1. Cut ONE score line from edge to center. The two flaps lay one over the other and become your “floor.”

  1. Stamp and color the “walls” and “floor” of the room with the card laid out flat. Use the lines from Sketchy borders with Cognac ink to create “beadboard paneling” as shown. Use the flowers from the Rub A Dub set with Moulin Rouge ink for the “wallpaper.”

  1. Adhere the circle/oval patterned paper as a “rug.” Draw in fringe with a fine tip pen.

  1. Stamp and color the exterior “walls” as well, if desired.

  1. On scrap cardstock, stamp (in black) and color your scenic elements. For this project, stamp and color the bathing beauty and towels. Use the Prismacolor pencils and blend with Gamsol.

  1. Highlight bubbles with Dimensional Magic and add silver microbeads. Allow to dry completely.

  1. Stamp Flowers on gold rimmed tag for “framed artwork” in the room.

  1. Cut out scenic elements leaving a ¼” tag at the bottom. This will be folded and used to secure the elements to the “floor.”

  1. Fold card up into room shape. Place scenic elements as shown and secure. Be sure to leave enough room for the elements to fold up flat for mailing.

  1. To fold for mailing, first fold “floor” flaps up. Then fold card in half so that the flaps are on the OUTSIDE of the card. The card will fold flatter this way.

  1. This card will require extra postage (12-23 cents), but the recipient will love it!
